Files and file actions
What Cmd K does on a file in Cleat: rename, move, tag, compress, share, convert images, merge PDFs, set a wallpaper, open a folder in Terminal, and undo any of it.
Files reach the palette from search, from a typed path, from recent, from the Finder selection (selected files) and from the Services menu (received items). Wherever a file row came from, ⌘ K has the same actions.
On every file
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Open, Reveal in Finder, Quick Look | The basics; Quick Look is also ⌘ Y |
| Copy Path, Copy File | The path as text, or the file itself for pasting into Finder or Mail |
| Open With… | Pick an app |
| Rename…, Move to Folder…, Edit Finder Tags… | Never replaces an existing name |
| Compress to ZIP | An archive beside the file |
| Share / AirDrop… | The macOS share sheet |
| Move to Trash | Reversible during the session |
| Download from iCloud | On iCloud Drive items that are not local, with progress under icloud downloads |
| Undo Last File Change | Reverses the last rename, move, tag edit or Trash |
Folders
Open in Terminal opens the folder in the terminal you already use (iTerm, Ghostty, Warp, kitty, Alacritty or WezTerm when one is running, Terminal otherwise). Browse Folder puts its path in the field so you can walk into it; see Shell, paths and recent files.
Images
Convert to PNG, JPEG or HEIC writes a copy beside the original through sips; the original is untouched and an existing name is never replaced (photo-2.png if photo.png is taken). Set as Wallpaper applies the image to every display. Copy Image puts the picture itself on the clipboard, for pasting into a document rather than a Finder window.
PDFs
Copy Text from PDF copies every page’s text. Scanned PDFs have none; use Copy Text from Screen on them instead. With two or more PDFs selected, the batch menu has Merge PDFs into One, in selection order, written as Merged.pdf beside the first file.
Several files at once
selected files (the Finder selection) or received items with more than one file has an Actions row for the whole selection: move all to a folder, add a prefix to every name, set tags, compress each, download iCloud items, merge PDFs, open the folder in Terminal, share, or move all to the Trash. Every destination is checked before anything moves, so one clash stops the operation with nothing changed.
Undo
Renames, moves, tag edits and Trash are reversible during the session from file activity or ⌘K › Undo Last File Change. Undo compares file identity and modification stamps first and refuses if a file changed or its old name has been taken since.
The file pane
In recent and while browsing a typed path, the selected file’s kind, size, modified and created dates, tags, iCloud state and location sit on the right, with Reveal, Copy Path and Quick Look.
