Mac actions

Everything Cleat can do to the Mac itself with no script: sleep, lock, screenshots, Mission Control, Show Desktop, quit or hide apps, Dock and Stage Manager toggles, AirDrop, Time Machine, and live cards for battery and the machine.

Cleat systemUpdated

These are built into Cleat, so they rank like apps, work without a commands folder, and ask before anything destructive. Type the name or a word from it: dark finds Toggle Dark Mode, afk finds Lock Screen, shot finds the screenshots. Every one can take an alias or a hotkey from ⌘K.

Power and screen

Action Notes
Sleep, Sleep Display The whole Mac, or only the screen
Lock Screen Lock without sleeping
Start Screen Saver
Keep Awake Until you run it again; the row shows which state you are in
Restart, Shut Down, Log Out Each asks first
Toggle Dark Mode
Brightness Up, Brightness Down One notch, like the keys, for built-in and Apple displays
Keyboard Backlight Up, Down On Macs with a lit keyboard

Screenshots

Screenshot to Clipboard and Screenshot to File open the system picker: drag an area, or press Space to pick a window. The file goes where macOS keeps screenshots (Desktop unless you changed it in the Screenshot app). Screenshot Whole Screen captures every display to the clipboard once the palette has gone. Copy Text from Screen is the OCR version; see Screen tools.

Windows and apps

Action Notes
Mission Control, Show Desktop, Show Windows of Front App The same three views as the hot corners
Hide Other Apps Everything except the app you came from
Quit Front App Asks the app you came from to close
Force Quit Front App Asks first; for an app that stopped responding
Quit All Apps Asks first; every app except Finder
Relaunch Finder, Restart Dock For a stuck desktop or Mission Control
Toggle Dock Auto-Hide, Toggle Stage Manager, Toggle Desktop Icons The same switches as the settings panes; the Finder relaunches for icons
Toggle Hidden Files Dotfiles in Finder

Halves, quarters, thirds and layouts are on the Window management page.

Sound and media

Toggle Mute, Volume Up, Volume Down, and volume 30 to set a level. Play / Pause, Next Track and Previous Track reach whatever is playing. See Now playing, media keys and brightness.

Files, sharing, backups

Action Notes
Open AirDrop The Finder AirDrop window, to send or receive
Empty Trash Through Finder
Eject All Disks Every external volume; drives ejects one at a time
Back Up Now Starts a Time Machine backup
Clear Clipboard Empties the system pasteboard; Cleat’s history is kept
Speak Clipboard, Stop Speaking Reads the clipboard text aloud with the system voice
Toggle Wi-Fi
Toggle Do Not Disturb Runs a Shortcut named “Toggle Do Not Disturb”, the only way macOS allows

Live cards

Some queries show a card instead of a list, updating the moment macOS reports a change:

  • battery shows charge, power source, Low Power Mode and, on laptops, health and cycle count.
  • about this mac shows the model, chip, memory, macOS version, model identifier and serial number. The serial is hidden in privacy mode.
  • storage, memory, uptime and system status show the rest.
  • audio, network, bluetooth, displays, drives, windows, context, now playing and permissions show lists with controls. Press Tab to reach the buttons.

Keyboard layouts

Every enabled input source is a “Switch to …” row, and Next Keyboard Layout cycles them. See Keyboard layouts.

Also useful

qr and any text draws a QR code; Return copies the image. password 24 and pin 6 generate random values with the system generator. System Settings panes open by name: wifi, sound, login items, full disk access. See Instant answers and Bundled commands for the script versions of some of these.

Night Shift, notifications and brightness

Toggle Night Shift flips it on or off now, whatever the schedule says, through the same client the Displays pane uses; it says so if a Mac has no Night Shift. Clear Notifications presses every Clear All and Clear in Notification Center through Accessibility, and reports when there was nothing to clear. brightness 50, brightness 80% or set brightness to 20 sets a value on the built-in and Apple displays, the way volume 50 does; external monitors that ignore the call keep the keyboard keys.
